In a partnership with a wealthy benefactor, who shall remain nameless, we're introducing the latest and greatest in the Reddit blockchain experience! Recently, there's been a surge in ChatGPT generated posts. These come in two flavours: bots creating and posting answers, and human users generating answers with ChatGPT and copy/pasting them. Regardless of whether they are being posted by bots or by people, answers generated using ChatGPT and other similar programs are a direct violation of R3, which requires all content posted here to be original work. We don't allow copied and pasted answers from anywhere, and that includes from ChatGPT programs. Going forward, any accounts posting answers generated from ChatGPT or similar programs will be permanently banned in order to help ensure a continued level of high-quality and informative answers. We'll also take this time to remind you that bots are not allowed on ELI5 and will be banned when found.

Wouldn't the radiation keep people away for thousands of years?

I had a glass dish that I've been using in baking. The other day I fked up and turned on the wrong burner when I was making something else. I never experienced it before but when I went to sit down suddenly a loud bang happened and the glass broke into a million shards. So why did that happen? I'd imagine it's something about molecules or something.

Furthermore, what happens to traces of psychoactive chemicals, painkillers and other drugs that are assuredly washed into sewers and treated? Does that impact those who end up drinking that water downstream?

How "pure" is treated water? Is it purely H20 with nothing else present, down to its very atomic structure? Or are there traces?

I have always wondered why this was if someone could explain it to me!

Gameshow I'm watching just asked which citrus fruit is also known as a shaddock and, having never heard of it, wondered if the interpreter was in the same boat and had to spell it out or something

So I can’t find anything other than just diseases that can cause coughs. I’m talking about on an anatomic level, why do they feel like that? Not like a normal cough, those really deep chesty ones when you’re sick that you can feel in your sternum. Why do those hurt like they do? What makes those coughs so different from normal ones?

Isn’t there databases that would be able to tell if someone’s identity is fake?

Hopefully my question makes sense. If I skip a meal I get really really hungry and the I forget about it and only remember when I feel faintish. Why do bodies stop the hunger feeling?

When you remove a stain the stain generally is collected in whatever you’re using to remove it (water, rag, etc.) and turns it that color. The Tide pen always stays white and yet the stain disappears. How does this work? Why isn’t the pen collecting the color?

Most of the time when I watch a movie using speakers, it’s super loud well under half volume, whereas my 6xx headphones at max volume are much quieter. Same thing with my AirPods 3rd gen. New ones are uncomfortably loud at 100% so I keep them a couple clicks down, but the headroom available isn’t enough to compensate for unusually quiet content.

I’m always left thinking why at least one company doesn’t make super loud headphones that are uncomfortable over like 50%. That way if you do need the extra volume, you’re covered. Surely a DAC isn’t needed for a normal situation like that.

I don’t have the financial literacy to understand how a market crash caused people to lose their homes. In my mind (and I guess I’m wrong) when you get your home and mortgage, don’t you have a set monthly payment for the term of the loan? If you were able to make the payment prior to the crash, how does a market crash change that? The only thing I can compare it to in my mind is buying a car. If I purchase a car, and have a set monthly payment, the ups/downs in market prices doesn’t change my ability to make a car payment that I was already paying. Someone ELI5 the factor(s) that I’m missing.

Title says it all. Not tech savvy.

I am thinking about long distant trains and inner city public transport. On long distant trains are (in my country) toilets. Still drivers might need to lo, before a stop. They can't just stop the train. Inner city trains usually don't even have a toilet.

Specifically for high prescription lenses like -5 and -6. Is it because its too much effort to try and focus the eyesight?
